After a year of trying to understand how social media could be used to promote a small business I figured there’s a science behind this madness. Beyond a tweet or a follow there are key factors that attracts attention and encourages readers to share your post with their social networks. To simplify things below are 5 tips that are easy and affordable for any small business.

1) Personalize your promotions! If a customer has mentioned that they are interested in a specific promotion then go for it. You never know how many other customers/client are thinking the same thing.

2) Use visuals for your social media posts. James Scherer at Wishpond states, “In 2014 visual content is just a smart business”.

3) Less is more. Posting less than 80 characters will get your post 66% more engagement. Once an audience is engaged they will keep coming back for more.

4) Timing is key. The best time to post is when your audience will see it. Posting between 6:30-8:30am is the timeframe that most people wake up and check their smart phones. Facebook traffic generally dies down after 4:00pm. You can also use your social media analytics to see what posts are popular and what time you posted your most popular post.

5) Share your content more than on the most popular social media sites (Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter) will get the word out there. Don’t overwhelm your audience with to many posts in a day.

6) Transparency builds trust! Be up front and open about things that are going on with your company. If you are rebranding your business this is a great opportunity to get feedback. If you just landed a new client tell the world. People like a great buy-in!
