I finally launched the Black Business Initiative. Although the program just begun and there is so much more I will be doing with it, this was a huge success. I pray this success is for our community as a whole. I get excited every time I think about the growth of our economic base (chills down spine, suppress urge to shout). Every once in a while, you come across a project, an initiative, a cause worth stopping the regular flow of life to help bring to fruition. This was one of those times. I don’t regret one bit of it. But then, once the dust settles, you also realize you displace those around, namely your family. And so, my thoughts for today are getting back to the balance.
Meditation: This is an important part to starting and ending my day. If you have racing thoughts like myself, you find that there are endless amounts of data and thoughts being processed through your mind non-stop. To clear my mind to start and stop my day, I find that time in the quite (usually surrounded by my furry four-legged friend) I can find that clarity, that peace, that sense of well-being through meditation. This is a time of mental healing and connection with the Maker of this Universe. In finding balance, this cannot be skipped.
Healthy Living: When I’m on the go, it’s so easy to eat fast food, junk food, not work out…the whole nine. Then I get to feeling sloppy and sluggish. I’m not nearly as productive when I make it my mission to eat healthy and exercise. I don’t even need 5hr energy shots when I’m living healthy! And if you know me, you know how I love my 5hr energy shots. So this too is a time to relieve the stress of the day, build my strength and bring sexy back!
Daily Learning: Leaders are readers. LOL. This phrase kills me. It’s really so true. I’m pretty sure every leader I know has read a wealth of books and has a reading list that builds. I too have a reading list. When I’m immersed in a project, it is increasingly difficult to spend time reading. However, I find that when I’m seeking balance, this is crucial. I must always be learning. If you ever feel you have nothing to learn…your growth will certainly be stumped. I prefer to read. But if reading is eluding you, try an audiobook while you’re driving, or listen to a podcast/webinar, etc. while you’re working.
Saying NO: This is my last and final thought on balance. So many of us want to be helpful. We really do. And the thought is noble. However, it’s also draining on your ability to see your dreams come to fruition. As I grow in my success, I get more and more request to be a part of various groups, and to join in on other efforts. I’m honored. I truly am. But I know that I must turn many of these opportunities down to focus on the goals I’ve set for myself and my family. These opportunities may be great opportunities. I may be very interested. But I also must use the limited amount of time I have to work on my goals and my family first. This allows me to breathe deeply knowing that each project or decision I make is further aligning me with my dreams and passions.
I hope this is helpful for others looking for balance. Leave your comments below and if you know someone who needs to find some balance in their hectic life, please share with them.
