B2BThrive - Helping Your Business Grow!

Have you heard that we are all separated by 6 degrees?  This basically states that within 6 connections you can reach practically anybody in the world.  Can this fact help motivate you to improve your ability to network?

Whether you’re climbing the corporate ladder or building a business, even if you’re just working a 9-5, having an awesome and extensive network will always work to your benefit. Just to start, sources say that 65-80% of jobs come from a personal connection.  That means that if you are interested in getting a job or a promotion, the best place to start that search is with your network.

Most business owners recognize the benefit of networking.  With increased exposure and excellent products/services, you can gain referrals, opportunities, advice and influence from having top of the line networking skills.  So how does one build these skills?

22384491_xlChange your Mindset.  Networking can feel disingenuous, but in reality, it shouldn’t be.  Networking is supposed to create a win-win situation for both parties involved.  This means that the relationship to come should be mutually beneficial.  To have that realness, it’s important to walk into any networking opportunities with a mindset of genuinely building new relationships.  Building a relationship doesn’t just consider what someone can do for you, but what you can also do for them.

Pay Attention.  How many times have you gone to a networking event, walked away with a bunch of cards and can’t even remember anyone you spoke to?  Yes, you can jot down a note or two on a card to help you remember, but in reality, if you spend time making 1-2 solid connections, that’s much more valuable than a host of cards to add to your LinkedIn. Those more indepth conversations will ensure that you remember your new connection and they remember you.

Practice the art of follow up.  You should make a dedicated effort to reconnect with those you have networked with within the week while the conversation or introduction is still fresh.  This can include scheduling a coffee meeting, connecting via social media, a follow up phone call or even a quick e-mail.  Make this a habit of relationship building.  Be intentional about this.  If this is out of your comfort zone, in time it will become more natural as you see your connections, opportunities and influence grow.

Connect others.  One way to be helpful to your new connection is to introduce them to someone else they should know.  Making these extra beneficial connections for others will help them remember who you are, see you in a favorable light and encourage them to help you make additional connections as well.

For some social butterflies, networking may come as second nature, but for others this is a real struggle.  Sometimes it’s not really understanding the purpose or power behind networking and sometimes it is simply being more introverted and not liking to get out and mingle.  Whichever side you fall on, creating a dynamic network is truly a key to success. The saying “it’s all about who you know” cannot be underestimated. Take these tips to heart, share with a buddy or two and start building your network!
